About Anderson County

Heavily mountainous Anderson County, located in the east central part of the state, was established in 1801, with the county seat located at Clinton. Oak Ridge is another city of note in the county, serving as the home of the United States Atomic Energy Commission.

The county was named in honor of Senator Joseph Anderson, who served from 1797 until 1815. Prior to 1797, Anderson was judge of the Territory South of the River Ohio for five years. He later served as Comptroller of the Treasury under President James Madison.

Points of interest other than Oak Ridge include Norris Dam State Park, the Lenoir Museum near Norris Dam and the Museum of Appalachia at Norris. Anderson County was formed from lands that previously had been parts of Knox and Grainger Counties.
