About Meigs County

The winding Tennessee River flows through Meigs County from northeast to southwest. The county was established in 1836, and named in honor of Return Jonathon Meigs.

Decatur is the county seat. Meigs was a colonel in the Continental Army. He distinguished himself at the Battle of Sag Harbor, after being captured earlier at Quebec and exchanged. He also participated in the victory at Stony Point. Meigs was appointed Indian agent for the Cherokee Indians in 1801 where he served for nearly twenty-three years.

Meigs County was formed from land that previously had been part of Rhea County.
