About Polk County
Most of Polk County, which is the state's south eastern corner, is encompassed
into the Cherokee
National Forest.
The county was founded in 1839 and its seat of government is located in Benton. The county was named in honor of James Knox Polk. He was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives; Representative of Congress; Speaker, House of Representatives; Governor of Tennessee and eleventh President of the United States. The Hiwassee River flows through the county, west to east, and to the south, the Ocoee Wildlife Management Area has a beautiful setting among the Cherokee National Forest. Items of Interest:
