Wamp Happy With Boehner Appointment, Though Whip Race Ends
Rep. Boehner won Thursday over current majority whip Rep. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., leaving Rep. Blunt in that seat. Rep. Wamp had been a candidate for majority whip - should Rep. Blunt move up. Rep. Wamp said, "I am very pleased that John Boehner was elected leader of House Republicans in what I think was a most important election. It gives us the opportunity to start anew, to begin fresh and recommit ourselves to the core principles that brought us into the majority 11 years ago. I think John Boehner is the man that can do that.
"John was in leadership when we gained the majority. He knows what reform is all about and will help lead us in the reforms that need to be made. I also think he will help us be more responsible with the monies of the Federal Treasury and bring about real accountability for the American people. I really do believe he is the perfect blend of experience and commitment to change. "I am pleased the undercurrent for a fresh start won the day in the House elections. Of course I am disappointed that we ended up not having a whip's election because I was running hard, gave it my best and was prepared to show very well. I think I may have even surprised some people how well I would have done had we voted for the whip. "But, either way, it was a great experience. It allowed me to listen to Members in depth, even very important committee chairmen, to hear what their needs are and better understand our how our Conference works and to prepare myself for the future. "As one Member said to me, "You did great. You presented yourself well. You helped yourself in our cause for sure and in the future you are in the queue," meaning basically that 'You are on deck.' "I am grateful for the opportunity to offer myself for leadership to our Conference and the privilege to serve here in the House, which is itself a great honor. I believe passionately that if we are right about the issues we should present it in an articulate and effective way and help the American people understand why we need to be doing what we're doing. "That's what my campaign was all about. We need to stand up and be counted and I was proud that the Class of '94 did that. John Shadegg presented himself well and Todd Tiahrt presented himself well. We've got work to do, no question about it, but I think we've made the first step in the right direction. "In the days, weeks and months ahead I look forward to offering myself for any leadership position or any service I can give our cause because I am ready, willing and able to help."
